  • Thorax SSM in healthcare

SPINAL COLUMN SUPPORT IN EXTREME SITUATIONS

In an emergency, you have to be ready for action in all situations. Carrying heavy equipment or carrying patients through impassable areas puts a lot of strain on the back. Experienced emergency personnel in particular often complain of back problems and are often unable to work.

Weighing just 690 grams, the Thorax SSM provides additional support under protective equipment, e.g. for the fire brigade or police, and offers stability and back protection in one. Thanks to the durable carbon construction, carrying heavy rucksacks with equipment such as those used by the emergency services is no longer a problem.

The load capacity optimisation of 40 % makes carrying and lifting extremely easy and supportive. The natural memory function of the Thorax SSM helps to bring the body into an upright position and relieves pressure on the spine. The Thorax SSM can also be worn throughout the working day in the healthcare sector and for up to 24 hours at a time in the professional fire service, so that it is immediately ready for use in an emergency.

SUCCESSFUL TEST PHASE AT THE PROFESSIONAL FIRE BRIGADE DÜSSELDORF

A successful 6-month test phase of the Thorax SSM was carried out at the Düsseldorf fire brigade in 2022.

The aim was to provide preventive health protection, reduce injuries and test the practical suitability of the device.

The Thorax SSM was tested by a total of 18 people during various fire and rescue service operations such as

  • Firefighting operations and exercises with and without breathing protection,

  • technical assistance and

  • stretcher assistance in the rescue service

as an elementary component in an overall "occupational safety" concept. All users received adequate information and training about the Thorax SSM in advance.

The final assessment and evaluation of the results resulted in an average grade of 2.2 (school grading system) and an approval and very high acceptance rate of 92 % for voluntarily wearing the Thorax SSM on duty. Material, handling, compatibility with PPE (personal protective equipment) and wearing comfort were assessed. The test subjects realised that the system primarily reduces the strain on the spine.

DYNAMIC ACTIVE STABILIZATION

The design and construction of the Thorax SSM system actively stabilizes the entire torso dynamically. By actively guiding the spine in the system, rotational movements of the trunk are dynamically controlled and the spine is protected from rotational damage. The muscles are stimulated to work actively, which results in a significantly higher utilization of the trunk muscles. The affected joints are particularly protected by the active system of the Thorax SSM.

The shoulder girdle, spine, pelvis and hips experience anatomical loading, which leads to better force distribution and therefore a gentler posture.
